Biodegradable Cat Litter

For those of you who are environmentally conscious, there are also certain types of biodegradable cat litter that you may prefer over other products. A biodegradable product is one that can be naturally broken down by the environment. You will find a wide variety of cat litter choices on the market. In order to find out whether a particular brand is biodegradable or not, read the packaging or do some Internet research. These days you will find litter made from a variety of different materials.


Clay is one of the most traditional and popular materials for cat litter, but not necessarily the best for all households. Clay litter comes in two varieties -- clumping and non-clumping. Clumping litter can be dangerous for kittens, so if litter training a kitten always use the non-clumping variety. One thing many cat owners dislike about clay based litters is the amount of dust produced by them when pouring the litter into the pan. In addition, clay litter is easily tracked around on your cat's paws if you don't provide a litter mat or ramp for entering and exiting the litter box.

Paper is a biodegradable litter material. Products like Yesterday's News by Purina are made with recycled paper that is better for the environment and your cat. Some people don't realize that these paper litters are actually more absorbent than some clay litters. Many paper based litters are scented and contain baking soda for maximum odor control. Alternatives to paper litter include cedar, wheat, sand and corn. All of these materials are also biodegradable. They work effectively as cat litter because of their texture and moisture retaining capacities.

You can even buy biodegradable cat litter boxes. These boxes are disposable and usually crafted from recycled paper. They hold up for about a week and although they must be scooped daily like all litter boxes you just throw them out rather than changing the litter inside. If you go for a traditional plastic litter box, it will need to be washed out and have the litter replaced on a weekly basis to curb bacteria growth and odor. No matter what kind of box you use, choosing biodegradable litter can be a positive choice for your cat, your household and your environment.
