Cat Litter Cleaning

For cat ownership, one major task is none other than cat litter cleaning. While this is certainly not the most pleasant of tasks, it is important to the cleanliness of your home and the health of your cat. The first thing you'll need to do when adopting a new kitten or cat is get all the necessary supplies ready. This includes food, water, and of course the litter box and litter. Choosing the right litter materials is important not only for you but your kitty as well.


One thing you should know is that clumping litter can be dangerous for kittens. Most kittens do end up consuming a small amount of litter during the potty training process. The clumping variety can harden in their digestive tract and cause dangerous or deadly blockages. At the least the ingestion of clumping litter can make your kitten sick. For kittens, start off with a non clumping clay litter or even an alternative litter. There are cat litters made from cedar, paper, corn, wheat and sand. These natural materials are considered better for your cat, your home and the environment.

Your cat's litter box should ideally have a cover on it so your cat can have privacy. There are boxes that come with attached covers as well as decorative kitty cottages that fit over top of any standard litter box. They provide your cat with total privacy and make your home look better than it would with an exposed litter pan. No matter what kind of litter or litter box you choose, it should be scooped at least twice daily. Cats need clean litter and many will refuse to go in a box that is dirty.

Once each week, your litter box should be cleaned completely. Dump out all the old litter and wash the box with soapy water. Rinse thoroughly, dry and refill with clean litter. If you add too much litter your cat may kick some out, however too little and your cat may not use the box at all. If this is too much hassle for you consider disposable litter boxes. They cut down on cat litter cleaning although they will need to be scooped daily. However you can throw them away and replace them when they get too dirty or worn rather than having to clean them each week. Look for biodegradable disposable boxes which are better for the environment.
