Cat Litter Covers

In addition to food, water, a litter box and litter, your cat should have a cover for their box. Cat litter covers give your feline a place to use the bathroom in privacy. Not only that, they hide unsightly cat waste and help mask odors. There are many different choices when it comes to covers for the litter box. You can go for a style that comes complete with a cover already attached. These boxes are usually made from heavy duty plastic and the lids snap on and off for cleaning. They are a bit more expensive than an uncovered box but worth the extra money.

There are also decorative covers that are not only functional but cute also. For example, the Kitty Cottage is a cover made to look like a little house. This makes your cat's litter area more appealing for you and your family, and gives your cat total privacy. Once you have your covered litter box purchased it is time for setup. Usually this involves pouring litter into the pan, then putting the cover on. When filling the litter pan go for a little less than half full. Many cats will kick out litter if they feel there is too much. There are many different types of cat litters to consider for your box. In addition to clumping and non-clumping clay litters, there are cedar litters, paper litters and even litters made out of corn and wheat.

Cat litter covers cannot mask urine and fecal odors if the box is not kept clean. It is necessary to scoop the litter box at least once or twice daily even if it is covered. Not only does vigilant scooping prevent odors, it is better for your cat. Cats are fastidious animals and some of them will refuse to go in a dirty litter box. Instead, they will go on the floor, in your bathtub or in your potted plants! For these reasons and others it is important to keep the litter box clean and sanitary whether it has a cover or not.
