Cat Litter Dust
Although some studies have shown no harm to cats or their owners from cat litter dust, others claim this dust can aggravate certain conditions like allergies and asthma while contributing to your level of indoor air pollution. If you don't like dealing with dust when filling the litter box, consider the type of litter you are using. Clay litter, especially the clumping variety, is a common culprit of dust and other problems. It can actually be hazardous for kittens because they sometimes end up consuming a small amount of the litter. It can make them sick or even cause internal blockages.
The solution is to look for brands that advertise a lower level of litter dust. And, if you have a kitten rather than a full grown litter trained cat, don't choose clumping litter. If you must go for clay, non clumping litter is recommended. However, there are certainly some good alternatives to old fashioned clay based cat litter. You can find litter made from all kinds of natural, non-toxic materials including pine, sand, wheat, corn and even recycled paper. These materials often work just as well, if not better than clay litter and are harmless to your pet.
Not only that, but these category of litters are biodegradable and dust free. You aren't going to get any silica dust when you use a litter made from cedar, paper, wheat or corn. If you are concerned about the environment, you will appreciate that these types of cat litter are more eco-friendly. You can purchase these natural litter products at many pet stores and even at stores like Wal-Mart and K-Mart. You can also order natural litter online from specialty merchants.
The problem of cat litter dust is one that is a big deal for some and not a big deal for others. You may be able to put up with some dust for the convenience of clay litter, especially if you've been using it for years with good results. However new kitten owners or those adopting adult cats should first consider cat litter made from an alternative material. If you start off with something like cedar or paper, your cat will get used to it in no time and so will you. The benefits of these natural litters outweigh the drawbacks in many cases.
