Cat Litter Tracking

One of the biggest complaints of cat owners is that their felines track cat litter around the house after using the box. The good news is that there are ways to cut down on cat litter tracking. First, look at the kind of litter you are using. Clay litters are notorious for tracking as well as dust. You may find brands that claim to be non-tracking but you should know that most of the time, your cat will end up kicking some litter out of the box no matter what brand you use.


A possible solution for the elimination of litter mess is a ramp. By installing a ramp that your cat must walk on to get in and out of the litter box, you give them an area onto which they can get the excess litter off their paws before walking around your home. You may also want to place your cat litter box underneath a large mat or pad where excess litter can fall. By keeping your pad and/or ramp clean you will avoid the issue of litter being strewn around the house.

You might also want to consider an alternative to clay litter. There are silica gel litters and even litters made from cedar, paper, wheat and corn. These litters cause less tracking simply because of what they are made from. Not only that, but they create less dust and are better for the environment. Feline Pine is one of the most popular alternative litter brands that can be found in most any store that sells cat litter. While some cat owners are hesitant to switch from clay to another litter material they are often glad they chose to do so.

In addition to preventing cat litter tracking by installing a pad and/or ramp and considering a litter change, you will need to keep the litter box as clean as possible. This is because some cats will actually kick litter out intentionally if their box is too dirty. Also, if the box is too full for your cat's liking you may find litter being kicked out. A covered litter box may also help keep the litter contained in the box where it belongs. While you can't avoid tracking altogether these strategies can prevent most of it and keep your home cleaner and more sanitary.
