Electric Cat Litter Box
Do you hate scooping the litter box? Maybe you don't currently own a cat, but are thinking about adopting one. Either way, an electric cat litter box may be worth your consideration. Also called automatic litter boxes or self cleaning litter boxes, these products actually clean the litter automatically. This means no more scooping of smelly, dirty litter several times each day. The box does all the work and all you have to do is empty the accumulated waste which is usually raked into a covered container that is attached to the box.
Automatic litter boxes are made by all kinds of manufacturers these days. LitterMaid, Cat Genie and Scoop Free are just a few names you might want to look for. All self cleaning litter boxes are not created equal, so do your research before shelling out the money for one of these. Self cleaning litter boxes start around $60 and go up from there. How much you'll pay for one depends on where you shop and which particular box you choose.
A self cleaning litter box usually has a sensor that knows when your cat enters and exits the box. After your cat exits, the box will rake out the waste into the disposal container. Not all automatic boxes have sensors, some have one-touch button design. When you push the button, the litter box is cleaned. These are great for people who are disturbed at night by the automatic boxes as some can be rather noisy. Also, some cats don't like the boxes once they realize there are moving parts inside. While most of the sensor type boxes are good about not raking until the cat is out of the box, it is possible the device may malfunction and start moving while the cat is still inside, scaring him or her away.
An electric cat litter box is not for every cat owner. If you are bringing home a young kitten it may be easier to start with a small, traditional litter box. Contrary to popular belief, all cats do not automatically know how to use the litter box. However the majority of them can be easily taught within days because covering their urine and feces is a natural instinct of the feline world. Once your kitten or cat understands the litter box is where they are supposed to go, you should have very few if any bathroom accidents.
