Large Cat Litter Boxes

You may consider using large cat litter boxes if you have more than one feline at home. However this may not be the best course of action. Cats are clean animals who prefer a private place to use the bathroom. They don't usually prefer sharing a litter box. Therefore, you may want to choose medium sized cat boxes and have one for each cat on each floor of your home. Cats are not only clean but territorial and will appreciate their own box.


When you are shopping for litter boxes, you might also want to shop for cat litter as well. There are many different types of cat litter on the market. Clay is the most common type of cat litter, but may not always be the best. Many companies make clay litter, including Tidy Cats. Clay is absorbent and it can help control odors, but it produces dust and may not be safe for all cats. For example, clumping clay litter should not be used with kittens because if they swallow it they can have serious health problems. If you prefer a clay litter for your kitten make sure it is non-clumping.

Pine litter is very popular as well because it is absorbent and naturally works to control odors. Feline Pine is a top brand of pine litter you can find in many stores that carry cat care supplies. Other materials used to make cat litter include paper, wheat, corn and sand. All of these materials are biodegradable which makes them more eco-friendly than other types of cat litter. Also your cat may prefer these alternative materials over clay because they are soft on the paws.

Whether you choose large litter boxes or smaller ones, each box in your home should be scooped at least once daily or more often if needed. Approximately once per week you should wash out each litter box, rinse and dry thoroughly and fill with fresh litter. There are also disposable litter boxes that are thrown away and replaced rather than being cleaned and reused. If your cats seem fine with sharing a litter box, you may want to try a large box, but if each cat gets their own box a medium sized box should suffice.
